This is cool--and wow, I had no idea that trees basically went extinct along with dinosaurs.
Coming from this point of ignorance, maybe the marine birds used sticks to nest, or to redirect currents around their nesting grounds? A lot of marine ecologies are shaped by fallen trees, roots, etc.
